Education Without Child Labor
Al Ashmounin Village, Mallawi District, Egypt | Education Without Child Labor - Alashmonin Shifters | 2025
Ahlan!
We are the Alashmonin Shifters, a determined youth-led movement working to end child labour and ensure every child's right to education. In 2025, we launched Education Without Child Labour, a campaign addressing the exploitation of children forced to work in harsh conditions instead of attending school. Our mission? To raise awareness about the dangers of child labour, shift community beliefs that normalise it, and help families understand that education is the only true path to breaking the cycle of poverty.

The Right-Sized Problem
Too many children in our village are forced into dangerous work instead of school. Parents often lack awareness of their children's rights and view child labour as a way to earn additional income, not realising the severe risks: injuries, psychological stress, school dropout, and a cycle of poverty that repeats across generations. Children working with sharp tools on farms or in workshops face life-threatening dangers daily, while their education and futures slip away.
What We Did
We combined awareness sessions, creative performances, and direct advocacy to reach families, business owners, and government officials.
Offline Impact
Parent and Children Awareness Sessions Helped parents recognize the risks of child labor and understand children's fundamental rights to safety and education.
Business Owner Visits Engaged local employers to discuss the dangers of hiring children and encouraged them to support education instead.
Theatrical Plays and Interactive Performances Brought the realities of child labor to life through powerful storytelling.
"Dream in a Picture" & Talent Competitions Helped children visualize their aspirations and recognize their abilities beyond labor.
Sports Day for Children Celebrated childhood through play, reminding families that children need time to learn and grow.
"Feelings Box" Created a safe space where children could express their emotions without fear.
Community Visibility Campaign Distributed 120 illustrated storybooks, installed banners and posters with the child helpline number and campaign QR code throughout the village.
High-Level Partnerships Coordinated with Child Protection Committees, the Labor Office, and Social Solidarity officials, including securing the Deputy Minister of Labor to deliver an awareness seminar for business owners.
Online & Media Impact
Joint Social Media Campaign with ACCM Partnered with ACCM to unite Shifters, children with disabilities, and refugee children in raising awareness about violence children face.
Digital Content & Expert Voices Created awareness videos, short reels, social media content, and podcast episodes with psychological and social experts.
Television and Radio Coverage Campaign representatives appeared on local TV and community radio to discuss the dangers of child labor and importance of education.
Campaign Impact
Secured Deputy Minister of Labour’s participation for business owner awareness event.
Built strong partnerships with government agencies and child protection committees.
Our most powerful story came from Sayed, a boy who worked on a farm cutting plants with sharp tools to help his family. One day, the tool slipped and struck his hand so deeply he nearly lost it.
After weeks of treatment, he was left with a long scar.
"Child labour is really dangerous. I almost lost my hand. I have this scar to remind me that I was risking my life. My parents spent much more money on my treatment than I ever earned from working. Working at a risky job has no value. It's dangerous, and we can lose everything in a moment."
Sayed promised to return to school and succeed. He told his friends:
"Protect yourselves. Go to school. Learn so you can build a better future. Work will always be there when we grow up, but our childhood won't come back."
Today, Sayed is back in school, determined to rebuild his future with education, not labor. His story proves why protecting children from dangerous work is not just important, but potentially lifesaving.
What’s Next?
We remain committed to protecting every child's right to education and childhood. We now want to expand our awareness sessions across Mallawi District and also simultaneously strengthen partnerships with government agencies and child protection committees.
