Ending Early Marriage in Maputo

Santa Isabel Neighbourhood, Maputo, Mozambique | Ending Early Marriage in Maputo - Malta Unida Pela Mudança | 2025

Olá!

We are Malta Unida Pela Mudança (United for Change), a tech-savvy youth movement using the power of media and digital storytelling to end early and forced marriages in Maputo. Since 2023, we've been fighting against the cultural practice of early initiation of sexual activity, a key driver of early pregnancies that pushes girls into forced marriages. Our mission? To create viral moments that spark national conversations and shift attitudes, proving that when young people control the narrative, change becomes unstoppable.

The Right-Sized Problem

Early initiation of sexual activity in our communities leads directly to early pregnancies and subsequent forced marriages. During the initiation rites season, young girls face cultural pressures that push them toward early sexual activity, cutting short their education and trapping them in cycles they never chose.

What We Did

We knew traditional awareness wasn't enough. We needed content that would break through, reach families where they are, and create moments impossible to ignore.

Offline Impact

  • Community Awareness Campaigns: Went neighborhood by neighborhood, engaging families in honest conversations about protecting girls from early marriage and risky situations.

  • School Visits on Law 19/2019: Equipped students and teachers with knowledge about Mozambique's laws against early marriage, making rights education accessible and actionable.

  • Radio Debates: Brought community voices together on air to discuss consequences, reporting mechanisms, and alternatives to harmful practices.

  • Conference Panels: Participated in high-level discussions alongside experts, public institutions, and civil society organizations, amplifying youth voices in policy spaces.

Online & Media Impact

  • The Viral Initiation Rites Video: During initiation rites season, we produced a short film about the risks of early and forced marriages. The reception was extraordinary: the video surpassed 50,000 views across social media platforms.

  • Prime-Time National Television: Our film was broadcast on major national TV channels during prime time, when families gather around the TV, ensuring maximum visibility and sparking household-level dialogue.

  • Webinars and Digital Forums: Created online spaces for deeper discussions, reaching audiences beyond Maputo and building a digital community committed to change.

Campaign Impact

Our greatest success came from strategic timing and culturally relevant storytelling. By releasing our initiation rites video during the exact season when girls face the most pressure, we created a moment that couldn't be ignored. The film's broadcast on the country's most-watched television channels during prime time meant families engaged with our message together, at home, when conversations matter most.

We ensured the video reached adolescents, parents, and broader communities. We supported promotion on social media, organized discussions following broadcasts, and engaged with local youth to reinforce the key messages. This milestone represents a historic step, expanding the reach and sustainability of our message and demonstrating that Shifters are not only raising awareness but also actively driving behavioral change.
